Sm Smile for tha camera
Say cheese
Sm Smile for tha camera
Sm Smile for tha camera
Sm Smile for tha camera
Say cheese

It is very obvious as to why I believe that “Camera Phone” by Da Musicians is the worst song ever. First of all, the whole meaning of the song is about a man taking a picture of a girl dancing with his camera phone. She is dancing, and he has his new cell phone out ready to take a picture of his hot girlfriend. This is not very poetic whatsoever. The meaning is so obvious, no symbols, no metaphors, just merely inappropriate words describing this scene. I guess that imagery is apparent, but not in a beautiful way that adds value to the song. Also, most of the song involves repetition. For example, the phrase, “Sm Smile for tha camera,” is repeated twelve times at the end of the song. There are also various words that aren’t, well, words. I don’t believe the words, “tha,” “nuttin,” “gon,” “crunk,” and “hotta” are in the English dictionary. This song is also very inappropriate. It has numerous swear words and is extremely sexual. All in all, this song is horrible. It has no poetic value, no lessons, and basically, no meaning. I would not recommend it to anyone, anywhere, anyhow.

Social Relevance

American Pie By: Don McLean

American Pie by Don Mclean has social relevance because it is a tribute to Buddy Holly, who died in a tragic plain crash. This song not only has to do with this tragic event, but McLean’s life in general. It entails the events of his life from the mid-1950’s to the end of the 1960’s. Music greatly changed through these times, as did American history in general. McLean believed that with the disastrous events of Buddy Holly dying and John F. Kennedy getting assassinated, America was going through an extremely difficult time. The actual, “Day the music died,” is February 3, 1959, when Holly, Ritchie Valens, and The Big Bopper were killed in a plane crash after a concert. The fact that Don McLean wrote this song pertaining to a crucial time in history proves it to me socially relevant. What also make this song so great are its numerous allusions to different musicians at the time, as well as the names of many famous songs. They add to this transition that music went through during the 1950’s and 1960’s. There are also numerous other poetic elements that add to this song’s value as a whole.

Born in the USA By: Bruce Springsteen

“Born in the USA” by Bruce Springsteen has social relevance because it reflects the difficult times of the Vietnam War. This song may seem very patriotic, but if one actually listens to the lyrics, it is the opposite. It talks about how many boys coming home from the Vietnam War aren’t the same as before and why should they be proud of where they are from when their country puts them through worthless torture. Springsteen introduces the song by talking about a boy who grew up in a “dead man’s town” who went through a lot, and has to spend the rest of his life covering it up. This is true of many boys growing up through poverty in many towns in the USA. Then, it explains that the boy got a rifle and was sent across seas to go fight for this country that essentially gave him nothing from when he was born. Basically, the boy lost everything in his life. He was born in the USA, and he had no choice but to live his life this way. This song is also extremely ironic because it has the tone of a happy patriotic song, but when the lyrics are read one sees Springsteen’s point very clearly.

Imagine By: John Lennon

“Imagine” by John Lennon has social relevance because it is an anti-war song. It was written during the tragic time of the Vietnam War, which was a very relevant protest age. Lennon wrote a very calm song simply suggesting a world that didn’t have any of the issues that it does. This song was very controversial because it was during the red scare, which was a time period when Americans were very paranoid of communism entering America. Communism is a type of government where everyone is treated equally, with money, schools, and everything. Essentially, this is an equal society but as Americans, this would be an extremely unfair way of life that would not be equivalent to freedom whatsoever. Since Lennon suggested a world with no possessions and equality, people suggested he was a communist. Personally, I think that Lennon was just a guy dreaming of a different world, and wished to share this world with all of the people to listen to his music. All in all, this song is very socially relevant because it reflects many issues in history mainly during the 1960’s. Unfortunately, Lennon was assassinated, but his music is still a part of many people’s lives to this day.

Original Lyrics

A Different Song By: Jamie Hall

Sometimes life, it moves too fast
I barely catch my breath and then the moment its past
I know when I think back, I'll remember you
With everything I think and everything I do

*Chorus:
But the sun's still shining and I feel alright
The wheels will keep spinning, were all in flight
Things will change and we'll sing a different song
I know someday we'll get where we belong

When I told you I was leaving I could see the fake smile
But I told you I'd be back in a short while
Do you really think I could ever forget you?
Through the smiles and tears and everything we've been through?

*Chorus

If you don't change, I won't change
If you don't change, I won't change
We'll just be singing a different song...

Two Songs for Each Type

JOY

Free Falling by Tom Petty

She's a good girl, loves her mama
Loves Jesus and America too ALLUSION
She's a good girl, crazy 'bout Elvis
Loves horses and her boyfriend too
It's a long day livin' in Reseda
There's a freeway runnin' through the yard PERSONIFICATION
And I'm a bad boy, 'cause I don't even miss her
I'm a bad boy for breakin' her heart
And I'm free, I'm free fallin'
All the vampires walkin' through the valley
Move west down Ventura Blvd ALLITERATON
And all the bad boys are standing in the shadows
All the good girls are home with broken hearts
And I'm free, I'm free fallin'
I wanna glide down over Mulholland
I wanna write her name in the sky
I wanna free fall out into nothin'
Gonna leave this world for awhile
And I'm free, I'm free fallin'

This song is a great example of joy. It speaks of great troubles, and how keeping happy and joyous, and going on with life is what you need to do in life. Everyone has difficulties, but what makes a person is how they can keep their head up and get through them smiling.  Tom Petty uses his vocals to express his freedom.  Also, he uses many allusions throughout the song.  These include Elvis, Jesus, America, etc. Also, an example of personification is used when he says the freeway is  running.  Overall, this song is extremely joyous because it reflects freedom through life.

Livin' On a Prayer By: Bon Jovi

Once upon a time not so long ago:
Tommy used to work on the docks
union's been on strike
He's down on his luck - It's tough
so tough.
Gina works the diner all day
working for her man
She brings home her pay for love
for love.
She says: We've got to hold on to what we've got
'Cause it doesn't make a difference if we make it or not.
We've got each other and that's a lot for love -
We'll give it a shot.
We're half way there - Livin' on a prayer
Take my hand and we'll make it
I swear - livin' on a prayer.
Tommy got his six string in hock.
Now he's holding in what he used to make it talk -
So tough
it's tough.
Gina dreams of running away
when she cries in the night
Tommy whispers: Baby
it's okay
someday.
We've got to hold on to what we've got . . .
We're half way there - Livin' on a prayer
We've got to hold on ready or not
You live for the fight when it's all that you've got.
We're half way there - Livin' on a prayer
We're half way there - Livin' on a prayer
We're half way there - Livin' on a prayer

This song is a great example of joy. It speaks of great troubles, and how keeping happy and joyous, and going on with life is what you need to do in life. Everyone has difficulties, but what makes a person is how they can keep their head up and get through them smiling.  The vocals in this song also add to it's joy.  They are very powerful, and the song just has a feeling of happiness and power.

FRIENDSHIP

The Jumper By Third Eye Blind

I wish you would step back from that ledge, my friend
You could cut ties with all the lies SYMBOLISM
That you've been living in
And if you do not want to see me again
I would understand I would understand
The angry boy, a bit too insane
Icing over a secret pain You know you don't belong
You're the first to fight You're way too loud You're the flash of light
On a burial shroud I know something's wrong METAPHOR
Well everyone I know has got a reason To say Put the past away
I wish you would step back from that ledge, my friend
You could cut ties with all the lies
That you've been living in
And if you do not want to see me again
I would understand I would understand Well, he's on the table
And he's gone to code And I do not think anyone knows
What they are doing here And your friends have left
You've been dismissedI never thought it would come to this
And II want you to know Everyone's got to face down the demons
Maybe today We can put the past away
I wish you would step back from that ledge, my friend
You could cut ties with all the lies That you've been living in
And if you do not want to see me again I would understand
I would understand I would understand
Can you put the past away I wish you would step back from that ledge, my friend
I would understand...

This song is an excellent example of friendship because it deals with the singer's friend commiting suicide. The singer wishes his friend would not perform this act, but he understands him, and there for would always be there for him if he did. He says that everyone has a past, thus everyones has problems, and that he shouldn't end his life when he has so much future to live for besides the past. True friends would be there no matter what.  This song includes many examples of symbolism, including, "you could cut ties with all the lies that you've been living in."  Also, a metaphor is mentioned when the singer says, "You're a flash of light."  Overall, this song displays some very important meanings of friendship.

Dig By: Incubus

We all have a weakness
But some of ours are easy to identify.
Look me in the eye
And ask for forgiveness;
We'll make a pact to never speak that word again
Yes you are my friend.
We all have something that digs at us, SYMBOLISM
At least we dig each other PUN
So when weakness turns my ego up
I know you'll count on the me from yesterday
If I turn into another
Dig me up from under what is covering
The better part of me
Sing this song
Remind me that we'll always have each other
When everything else is gone.
We all have a sickness
That cleverly attaches and multiplies
No matter how we try.
We all have someone that digs at us,
At least we dig each other
So when sickness turns my ego up
I know you'll act as a clever medicine.
If I turn into another
Dig me up from under what is covering
The better part of me.
Sing this song!
Remind me that we'll always have each other
When everything else is gone.
Oh each other....
When everything
Else is gone.

This song is a great example of friendship because brings up an example of someone changing, and relying on their friends to get them out of this funk. He is basically saying that he knows his friends will always be there for him to be honest, and know him more than he knows himself.  This whole song uses symbols.  It uses the word, "dig" to describe loosing one's self to other's manipulations.  This word is also used as a pun in the beginning, which adds to it's significance. True friendship involves honest and trust, and this song has many examples of that.

KNOWLEDGE

Blowing in the Wind By: Bob Dylan

How many roads must a man walk down, before you call him a man?
How many seas must a white dove fly, before she sleeps in the sand? PERSONIFICATION
And how many times must a cannon ball fly, before they're forever banned?
The answer my friend is blowing in the wind, the answer is blowing in the wind. SYMBOLISM
How many years can a mountain exist, before it is washed to the sea?
How many years can some people exist, before they're allowed to be free?
And how many times can a man turn his head, and pretend that he just doesn't see?
The answer my friend is blowing in the wind, the answer is blowing in the wind.
How many times must a man look up,before he sees the sky?
And how many ears must one man have, before he can hear people cry ? HYPERBOLE
And how many deaths will it take till we know, that too many people have died?
The answer my friend is blowing in the wind, the answer is blowing in the wind.
The answer my friend is blowing in the wind, the answer is blowing in the wind.

This song is a great example of knowledge becuase of all the issues is brings about. Bob Dylan questions many things: What defines people?, When will people stop hurting eachother, Will peace ever be on earth? All of these questions are very profound, and although we don't have answers, this song makes us really think and yearn for knowledge of the wars on earth and history. Also, the use of hyperbole and personification further make this song have deep meaning.  Basically, this song really makes you think about life, and the meaning of actions through history.

Waiting on the World to Change By: John Mayer

Me and all my friends
We're all misunderstood
They say we stand for nothing and
There's no way we ever could
Now we see everything that's going wrong
With the world and those who lead it
We just feel like we don't have the means
To rise above and beat it SYMBOLISM
So we keep waiting
Waiting on the world to change
We keep on waiting
Waiting on the world to change
It's hard to beat the system
When we're standing at a distance
So we keep waiting
Waiting on the world to change
Now if we had the power
To bring our neighbors home from war
They would have never missed a Christmas ALLUSION
No more ribbons on their door
And when you trust your television
What you get is what you got
Cause when they own the information, oh
They can bend it all they want
That's why we're waiting
Waiting on the world to change
We keep on waiting
Waiting on the world to change
It's not that we don't care,
We just know that the fight ain't fair
So we keep on waiting
Waiting on the world to change
And we're still waiting
Waiting on the world to change
We keep on waiting waiting on the world to change
One day our generation
Is gonna rule the population
So we keep on waiting
Waiting on the world to change
We keep on waiting
Waiting on the world to change

This song is a great example of knowledge because it brings up many issues around the world.  John Mayer talks about the youth of America, and how there are so many issues going on.  We, as the future of America, have the potential to change the world, but that is easier said than done.  John Mayer just suggests that we are waiting for the world to change, not realizing that we need to take action in order to produce change.  There are many symbols in this song that promote deep meaning, as well as an allusion.  This song is an example of knowledge because it promotes deep thinking about the future of the world.

"The World in Six Songs"

friendship, love, joy, comfort, religion, knowledge

LOVE She is Love By: Parachute

I've been beaten down

Ive been kicked around

But she takes it all for me

And I lost my faith

In my darkest days

she makes me want to believe

They call her love, love, love, love, love

They call her love, love, love, love, love

she is loveAnd she is all I need she's all I need

Well I had my ways

They were all in vain

And she waited patiently

It was all the same

All my pride and shame

she put me on my feet

They call her love, love, love, love, love

They call her love, love, love, love, love

They call her love, love, love, love, love

she is loveAnd she is all I need

she is loveAnd she is all I need

she is loveAnd she is all I need

and when the world slows down deep

and when those stars burn out here

ohhh she'll be there yes she'll be there

They call her love, love, love, love, love

They call her love, love, love, love, love

They call her love, love, love, love, love she is love

And she is all I need she is love

And she is all I need she is love

And she is all I need

COMFORT I Wish You Were Here By: Incubus

I dig my toes into the sand
The ocean looks like a thousand diamonds
Strewn across a blue blanket
I lean against the wind
Pretend that I am weightless
And in this moment I am happy...happy
I wish you were here
I wish you were here
I wish you were here
I wish you were here
I lay my head onto the sand
The sky resembles a back lit canopy
With holes punched in it
I'm counting UFOs
I signal them with my lighter
And in this moment I am happy...happy
I wish you were hereI wish you were here
I wish you were hereWish you were here
The world's a roller coaster
And I am not strapped in
Maybe I should hold with care
But my hands are busy in the air saying
I wish you were hereI wish you were
I wish you were hereI wish you were here
I wish you were hereWish you were here

RELIGION Your Guardian Angel By: The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus

When I see your smile

Tears run down my face I can't replace

And now that I'm stronger I've figured out

How this world turns cold and breaks through my soul

And I know I'll find deep inside me I can be the one

I will never let you fallI'll stand up with you forever

I'll be there for you through it all even if saving you sends me to heaven

It's ok. It's ok. It's ok.Seasons are changing and waves are crashing And stars are falling all for us

Days grow longer and nights grow shorter I can show you I'll be the one

I will never let you fall

I'll stand up with you forever

I'll be there for you through it all

Even if saving you sends me to heaven Cuz you're my, you're my, my true love, my whole heart

Please don't throw that away Cuz I'm here for you

Please don't walk away,Please tell me you'll stay, stay use me as you will Pull my strings just for a thrill

And I know I'll be ok Though my skies are turning gray I will never let you fall

I'll stand up with you forever

I'll be there for you through it all

Even if saving you sends me to heaven

Pun and Euphemism

PUN

11 am By: Incubus

Seven am;
The garbage truck beeps as it backs up
And I start my day thinking about what I've thrown away.
Could I push rewind?
The credits traverse, signifying the end
But I missed the best part.
Could we please go back to start?
Forgive my indecision

Then again, Then again, Then again, you're always first when no one's on your side
But, then again, a day will come when I want off that ride.

Eleven am,
By now you would think that I would be up
But my bedsheets shade the heat of choices I've made
And what did I find?
I never thought I could want someone so much
'Cause now you're not here and I'm knee deep in that old fear.
Forgive my indecision... I am only a man.

Then again, Then again, Then again, you're always first when no one's on your side
But, then again, a day will come when I want off that ride.

Twelve pm and my dusty telephone rings.
Heavy head up from my pillow, who could it be?
I hope its you.

Then again, you're always first when no one's on your side
But, then again, the day has come and I want off that ride.

In this song, Incubus uses a pun with the term “thrown away.” The singer refers to a garbage truck taking away his trash, but also marking how parts of his life have been turned into waste.

Dig By: Incubus

We all have a weakness
But some of ours are easy to identify.
Look me in the eye and ask for forgiveness;
We'll make a pact to never speak that word again
Yes you are my friend.

We all have something that digs at us,
At least we dig each other

So when weakness turns my ego up
I know you'll count on the me from yesterday

If I turn into another
Dig me up from under what is covering
The better part of me
Sing this song
Remind me that we'll always have each other
When everything else is gone.

We all have a sickness
That cleverly attaches and multiplies
No matter how we try.

We all have someone that digs at us,
At least we dig each other
So when sickness turns my ego up
I know you'll act as a clever medicine.

If I turn into another
Dig me up from under what is covering
The better part of me.
Sing this song!
Remind me that we'll always have each other
When everything else is gone.

Oh each other....
When everything else is gone.

Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, ohh
oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, ohhhh

If I turn into another
Dig me up from under what is covering
The better part of me.
Sing this song!
Remind me that we'll always have each other
When everything else is gone.

Oh each other....
When everything else is gone.
Oh each other....
When everything else is gone.

In this song, Incubus uses the word “dig” as a pun. Used here, this word can have multiple interpretations. For example, it could refer to an annoyance, actually “digging” up something, recovering hidden traits, etc.

EUPHEMISM

Circles By: Incubus

You saw me lost in treading water
I looked pathetic and
As helpless as a stinger
Without a bee
But underneath my presentation
Yeah
I knew the walls were coming down
And the stones that fell were
Aiming away from me
Hey what would it mean to you?
To know that it'll
Come back around again
Hey whatever it means to you
Know that everything
Moves in circles

I saw you standing in
My headlights
Blink blink blink
I thought I'd run you down
For the weight you left on me
instead I pushed rewind
Reversed and drove away
And see you
Disappear in my rearview
Brought to me the word
Reciprocity

Hey what would it mean to you?
To know that it'll
Come back around again
Hey whatever it means to you
Know that everything
Moves in circles

Round and round we go
We could know
It'd end so well
We fall on and we fall off
Existential carousel
Spin

Hey what would it mean to you?
To know that it'll
Come back around again
Hey whatever it means to you
Know that everything
Moves in circles
Everything moves in circles

Round and round and
Round and round and
Round and round and
Round and round

This song is a euphemism because it uses the phrase, “everything moves in circles,” which sounds a lot better than, “you will get what you deserve you monster of a person.”

Nice To Know You By: Incubus

Better than watching Geller bending silver spoons.
Better than witnessing new born nebulas in bloom.
She who sees from 'up high' smiles and surely sings.
Perspective pries her once weighty eyes and it
Gives you wings.

I haven't felt the way I feel today
In so long it's hard for me to specify.
I'm beginning to notice how much this feels
Like a waking limb... in pins and needles,
Nice to know you, good-bye x 4
Nice to know you... to know you

Deeper than the deepest Cousteau would ever go.
Higher than the heights of what we often think we know.
Blessed she who clearly sees the wood for the trees.
To obtain a 'birds eye' is to turn a blizzard to a breeze.

I haven't felt the way I feel today
In so long it's hard for me to specify.
I'm beginning to notice how much this
Feels like a waking limb... pins and needles,
Nice to know you, Good-bye x4
Nice to Know You,
To know... You

So could it be that it had been there all along?

I haven't felt the way I feel today
In so long it's hard for me to specify.
I'm beginning to notice how much this
Feels like a waking limb... pins and needles,
Nice to know you, Good-bye, x4
Nice to Know You
To know..You

This song is a euphemism because it uses the phrase, “nice to know you,” which sounds a lot better than, “it was great but you ruined everything!” This song is also very optimistic sounding, which adds to its euphemism qualities.

Allusion Ambiguity Allegory

ALLEGORY

Dig By Incubus

We all have something that digs at us,
At least we dig each other
So when weakness turns my ego up
I know you'll count on the me from yesterday
If I turn into another
Dig me up from under what is covering
The better part of me
Sing this song
Remind me that we'll always have each other
When everything else is gone.
We all have a sickness
That cleverly attaches and multiplies
No matter how we try.
We all have someone that digs at us,
At least we dig each other
So when sickness turns my ego up
I know you'll act as a clever medicine.
If I turn into another
Dig me up from under what is covering
The better part of me.
Sing this song!
Remind me that we'll always have each other
When everything else is gone.
Oh each other....
When everything
Else is gone.

This song is an allegory because it uses symbols in order to convey meaning, and a lesson. The singer is telling his friends to let him know if he is not being true to himself. He tells them to, "dig him up from under what is covering" him. This is using the word "dig" as a symbol for his friends completely being there for him. This is also a life lesson in being true to one's self.

ALLUSION

Summer of 69 By Brian Adams

I got my first real six-string
Bought it at the five-and-dime
Played 'til my fingers bled
It was summer of '69

Me and some guys from school
Had a Band and we tried real hard
Jimmy quit and Jody got married
I shualda known we'd never get far

Oh when I lock back now
That was seemes to last forever
And if I had the choice
Ya - I'd always wanna be there
Those were the best days of my life

(CHORUS)

Ain't no use in complainin'
When you got a job to do
Spent my evenin's down at the drive in
And that's when I met you

Standin on a mama's porch
You told me that you'd wait forever
Oh and when you held my hand
I knew that it was no or never
Those were the best days of my life

(Chorus) Back in Summer of '69

Man we were killin' time
We were young and restless
We needed to unwind
I guess nothin' can last forever, no

And now the times are changin'
Look at everything that's come and gone
Somethimes when I play that old six-string
I think about ya wonder what went wrong

Standin' on a mama's porch
You told me it would last forever
Oh the way you held my hand
I knew that it was now or never
Those were the best days of my life

(Chorus) Back in summer of '69

This song contains the allusion, "summer of '69." Here, the singer is alluting to a specific event in his life, and it is a major part of the song.

AMBIGUITY

Closing Time By Semisonic

Closing time - time for you to go out, go out into the world.
Closing time - turn the lights up over every boy and every girl.
Closing time - one last call for alcohol, so finish your whiskey or beer.
Closing time - you don't have to go home but you can't stay here.

I know who I want to take me home.
I know who I want to take me home.
I know who I want to take me home.
Take me home...

Closing time - time for you to go back to the places you will be from.
Closing time - this room won't be open 'til your brothers or you sisters
come.
So gather up your jackets, and move it to the exits - I hope you have found
a
friend.
Closing time - every new beginning comes from some other beginning'send.

Yeah, I know who I want to take me home.
I know who I want to take me home.
I know who I want to take me home.
Take me home...

Closing time - time for you to go back to the places you will be from...

I know who I want to take me home.
I know who I want to take me home.
I know who I want to take me home.
Take me home...

Closing time - every new beginning comes from some other beginning'send...

This song is ambiguous because it has various meanings. Here literally, the singer is talking about closing a store down, and this can be interpreted as either him as a worker or a customer. This song also has more figurative meaning, and it can be interpreted as a song embracing the changes that people undergo through life. The meanings are endless.

Simile and Metaphor

Simile:

Like a Bridge Over Troubled Water By: Simon and Garfunkel

When you’re weary, feeling small,
When tears are in your eyes, I will dry them all;
I’m on your side. When times get rough
And friends just can’t be found,
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down.
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down.

When you’re down and out,
When you’re on the street,
When evening falls so hard
I will comfort you.
I’ll take your part.
When darkness comes
And pain is all around,
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down.
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down.

Sail on silvergirl,
Sail on by.
Your time has come to shine.
All your dreams are on their way.
See how they shine
If you need a friend
I’m sailing right behind.

Like a bridge over troubled water
I will ease your mind.
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will ease your mind.

This song is a simile becuase it is using the word "like" to compare two things. In the main simile of the song, "like a bridge over troubled water," the song writer is comparing a friendship to a bridge over troubled water. He is saying that he will always protect this person and always be there to talk to if they need help going through the struggles of life.

Paradise By: Stratoverious

Late at night I find myself again
Wondering and watching TV
I can't believe what's on the screen
Something that I wouldn't like to see

Many rare species will perish soon
And we'll be short on food
Why do we have to be so selfish
We've got to change our attitude

I know that I am not
The only one that's worried
Why don't we all
Wake up, and realize

Like the birds in the sky
We're flying so high

Without making anykind of sacrifice
We've got so little time
To undo this crime
Or we'll lose our paradise

It seems to me that there's no sense at all
Nobody cares it's always the same
Mother nature's crying out in pain
I know we're the one's to blame

This song contains the simile, "like birds in the sky we're flying so high," to compare themselves to birds. They are in such a state of bliss that they are, "flying," and can basically do nonhuman things.

Metaphor:

Black Heart Inertia By: Incubus

Walking alone tonight
'Cause I've only got room for two
Me and my burdened black heart
It's all we know how to do

Yet I look for a bigger bang
Than the kind I continually see
Sick of all this inertia
I want a human being

Lover, can you help me?
I'm a child lost in the woods
A black heart pollutes me
And I think

You're a mountain that I'd like to climb
Not to conquer, but to share in the view

Pulled by a false inertia
Pushed out by circumstance
Pistol firing at my feet
That's coercing me to dance

Yet I look for a bigger bang
Than the kind I'm sorry to know.
Here I am, first foot of the climb
Watch me go.

Lover, can you help me?
I'm a child lost in the woods
A lit path eludes me
And I think

You're a mountain that I'd like to climb
Not to conquer, but to share in the view
You're a bonfire and I'm gathered 'round you
Set this old black heart inertia aflame

Send it away [x2]

You're a mountain
That I'd like to climb
Not to conquer, but to share in the view
You're a bonfire
And I'm gathered 'round you
Set this old black heart inertia aflame

Set it aflame, send it away

This song contains many metaphors, which are comparisons not using like or as. The one repeated the most is, "Your a mountain that I'd like to climb," which is comparing this person to a mountain that they'd like to climb, or someone that they'd like to explore.

Bullet With Butterfly Wings Lyrics

The world is a vampire, sent to drain
Secret destroyers, hold you up to the flames
And what do I get, for my pain?
Betrayed desires, and a piece of the game
Even though I know -- I suppose I'll show
All my cool and cold-like old job
Despite all my rage, I am still just a rat in a cage
Then someone will say what is lost can never be saved
Despite all my rage, I am still just a rat in a cage
Now I'm naked, nothing but an animal
But can you fake it, for just one more show
And what do you want, I want to change
And what have you got
When you feel the same
Even though I know--I suppose I'll show
All my cool and cold--like old job
Despite all my rage, I am still just a rat in a cage

Then someone will say what is lost can never be saved
Despite all my rage, I am still just a rat in a cage
Tell me I'm the only one
Tell me there's no other one
Jesus was an only son
Tell me I'm the chosen one
Jesus was an only son for you
Despite all my rage, I am still just a rat in a cage
And I still believe that I cannot be saved

This song contains many metaphors. The singer calls himself a, "rat in a cage," comparing himself to someone controled, or caged in.

Irony and Paradox

Pardon Me By: Incubus

Pardon me while I burst...
A decade ago, I never thought I would be,at twenty-three,
on the verge of spontaneous combustion. -Woe-is-me.-
But I guess that it comes with the territory,
An ominous landscape of
never-ending calamity.I need you to hear, I need you to see
that I have had all I can take and
exploding seems like an imminent possibility
to me.So pardon me while I burst
into flames.I've had enough of the world
and its people's mindless games.
So pardon me while I burn
and rise above the flame.Pardon me, pardon me...
I'll never be the same!
Not two days ago,I was having a lookin a book
and I saw a picture of a guy
fried up above his knee.
I said, "I can relate,"cause lately
I've been thinking of combustication
as a welcome vacation fromthe burdens of
the planet Earth.like gravity, hypocrisy, and the perils of being in 3-D...
but thinking so much differently. Pardon me while I burst
into flames.I've had enough of the world
and its people's mindless games. So pardon me while I burn and rise above the flame.
Pardon me, pardon me...I'll never be the same!
Never be the same, yeah...Pardon me, while I burst into flames...
Pardon me, pardon me, pardon me.
So pardon me while I burstinto flames.
I've had enough of the worldand its people's mindless games.
So pardon me while I burnand rise above the flame.
Pardon me, pardon me...I'll never be the same!
Never be the same, yeahh!!

The whole chorus to this song is ironic because he says, "Pardon me while I burst." This is because the term, "pardon me," is usually used to be polite or to excuse yourself from something miniscule. In this song, Incubus is explaining how he wants to burst away from society, and this song's message is not polite by any means. Also the phrase, "I've been thinking of cumbustication as a welcomed vacation," is ironic because combustication is defined as a means of burning, and a vacation is known as a relaxing break from the normal daily life.

Fool in the Rain by: Led Zeppelin

Well there's a light in your eye that keeps shining
Like a star that can't wait for the night
I hate to think I've been blinded baby
Why can't I see you tonight?
And the warmth of your smile starts a-burnin'
And the thrill of your touch gives me fright
And I'm shaking so much, really yearning
Why don't you show up, make it all right?
Yeah, it's all right. And if you promised you'd love
so completely and you said you would always be true
You swore that you would never leave me, baby:
What ever happened to you?
And you thought it was only in movies
As you wish all your dreams would come true
It ain't the first time believe me, baby I'm standin here feeling blue
Yeah I'm blue Now I will stand in the rain on the corner
I'll watch the people go shuffling downtown
Another ten minutes no longer And then I'm turning around
The clock on the wall's moving slower
My heart it sinks to the ground And the storm that I thought would blow over
Clouds the light of the love that I found
Now my body is starting to quiver And the palms of my hands
getting wet I've got no reason to doubt you baby, It's all a terrible mess
I'll run in the rain till I'm breathless When I'm breathless
I'll run till I drop, hey The thoughts of a fool's kind of careless
I'm just a fool waiting on the wrong block, oh yeah Light of the love that I found...

This song contains irony because at the beginning a man is standing in the rain on the corner waiting to meet his love. She doesn't show up and he fears that she doesn't love him anymore and he is a fool just waiting there, standing in the rain. Then, he realizes that he was just waiting on the wrong corner. This is ironic because his love really does love him, and he was a fool for standing at the wrong corner, not because his love doesn't want him.

Bruised By: Jack's Mannequin
(Paradox)

I've got my things, I'm good to go
You met me at the terminal
Just one more plane ride and it's done
We stood like statues at the gate
Vacation's come and gone too late
There's so much sun where I'm from
I had to give it away, had to give you away
And we spent four days on anIsland at your family's old hotel
Sometimes perfection can be It can be perfect hell,
perfect...Hours pass, and she still counts the minutes
That I am not there, I swear I didn't mean
For it to feel like thisLike every inch of me is bruised, bruised
And don't fly fast. Oh, pilot can you help me?
Can you make this last? This plane is all I got
So keep it steady, nowCause every inch you see is bruised
I lace my Chucks, I walk the aisleI take my pills, the babies cry
All I hear is what's playing throughThe in-flight radio
Now every word of every songI ever heard that made me wanna stay
Is what's playing throughThe in-flight radio, and I
And I am, finally waking up
Hours pass, and she still counts the minutes
That I am not there, I swear I didn't mean
For it to feel like this
Like every inch of me is bruised, bruised
Don't fly fast. Oh, pilot can you help me?
Can you make this last? This plane is all I got
So keep it steady, nowCause every inch you see is bruised, yeah
So read your books, but stay out late
Some nights, some nights, and don't think
That you can't stop by the bar
You haven't shown your face here since the bad news
Well I'm here till close, with fingers crossed
Each night cause your place isn't far
And hours pass, and hours pass, yeah, yeah...
Yeah, yeah, she still counts the minutes
That I am not there, I swear I didn't mean
For it to feel like thisLike every inch of me is bruised, bruised
And don't fly fast. Oh, pilot can you help me?
Can you make this last? This plane is all I got
So keep it steady, now
Cause every inch you see is bruised, bruised, bruised.

In this song, the bolded line is a paradox because perfection is never considered hell. This song is comparing perfection to hell, and they are complete different things. The phrase is considered a paradox for this reason.

Personification

Any Old Kind of Day by Harry Chapin

Turning on my pillow, thinking kind of strange.
The color is of midnight in this room.
The cars outside are coughing and it's kind of hard to sleep
and there's neon out the window, not the moon.
And it was just an any old kind of day,
The kind that comes and slips away,
The kind that fills up easy my life's time.
The night brought any old kind of dark,
I heard the ticking of my heart.
Then why'm I thinking somethings left behind?
I whistled round today and I skipped off a footloose jig
to the hurdy gurdy music of the street.
I looked past those rooftops and I saw the cloudless sky,
But I keep on asking why my life is passing by,
And I'm left up high and dry,
But it ain't no good to cry,
So I shrug my useless sigh,
And I trust to things that other days will meet.
And it was just an any old kind of day,
The kind that comes and slips away,
The kind that fills up easy my life's time.
The night brought any old kind of dark,
I heard the ticking of my heart.
Then why'm I thinking somethings left behind?
The night has had it's laughing,
when the street lights blind the stars,
So now it's shedding rain to sing it's sorrow,
It's time for me to sleep and to rest these thoughts away,
There's gonna be another day,
hey!when things will go my way,
And there's other things to say,
And there's other songs to play,
And there'll be time enough for thinking come tomorrow.
And it was just an any old kind of day,
The kind that comes and slips away,
The kind that fills up easy my life's time.
The night brought any old kind of dark,
I heard the ticking of my heart.
Then why'm I thinking somethings left behind

In the bolded examples, use of personification is used for effect. It gives these objects human qualities that these objects do not/ can not possess. In this song, cars can not caugh and the night can not laugh. By using these examples of personification, the song has great descriptive value and effect.

The Times They are A Changin' By Bob Dylan

Come gather ’round people
Wherever you roam
And admit that the waters
Around you have grown
And accept it that soon
You’ll be drenched to the bone.
If your time to you is worth savin’
Then you better start swimmin’ or you’ll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin’.
Come writers and critics
Who prophesize with your pen
And keep your eyes wide
The chance won’t come again
And don’t speak too soon
For the wheel’s still in spin
And there’s no tellin’ who that it’s naming.’
For the loser now will be later to win
For the times they are a-changin’.
Come senators, congressmen
Please heed the call
Don’t stand in the doorway
Don’t block up the hall
For he that gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
There’s a battle outside and it is ragin’.
It’ll soon shake your windows and rattle your walls
For the times they are a-changin’.
Come mothers and fathers
Throughout the land
And don’t criticize
What you can’t understand
Your sons and your daughters
Are beyond your command
Your old road is rapidly agin’.
Please get out of the new one if you can’t lend your hand
For the times they are a-changin’.
The line it is drawn
The curse it is cast
The slow one now
Will later be fast
As the present now
Will later be past
The order is rapidly fadin’.
And the first one now will later be last
For the times they are a-changin’.

This song has less obvious accounts of personification. For example, it suggests that waters can grow like people mature, which is not what really happens, thus giving it human qualities. Also, the song says that the battle will shake your walls, which it physically could, but not with the intention that humans would. Also, it suggests that a road ages like people age.

Point of View

First-person: I Shot The Sheriff by Bob Marley

This song is in first person becuase most of the lyrics use the words, "I." The phrases that come up throughout most of the song are, "I shot the sheriff, but I didn't shoot no deputy, oh no! Oh!," which is in first person.

Second-person: You Belong With Me by Taylor Swift

This song is in second person because Taylor Swift is says,"you," talking to someone in second person. This song is very personal, and the main second person lines are, "Dreaming about the day when you wake up and find that what you're looking for has been here the whole time. If you could see that I'm the one who understands you. Been here all along, so why can't you see? You, you belong with me, you belong with me."

Third-person Subjective: She Likes Me for Me by Blessid Union of Souls

This song uses a lot of third person pronouns like, "she," throughout the song. He is talking about the girls feelings when he sings, "She don't care about my car. She don't care about my money. And that's real good because I don't got alot to spend. But if I did it wouldn't mean nothin'. She likes me for me."

Stream of Consciousness: Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd

This song is a stream of consciousness because the lyrics seem like random thoughts that all come together into the song. Some of the words include, "Hello? Is there anybody in there? Just nod if you can hear me. Is there anyone at home? Come on, now. I hear you're feeling down.Well I can ease your pain. Get you on your feet again. Relax.I'll need some information first. Just the basic facts. Can you show me where it hurts?" I believe this song is about the singer in a psychiatrist's office and all of his random conscious thoughts throughout.

Hyperbole

Wild Horses by The Rolling Stones

Childhood living is easy to do
The things you wanted I bought them for you
Graceless lady you know who I am
You know I can't let you slide through my hands
Wild horses couldn't drag me away
Wild, wild horses, couldn't drag me away
I watched you suffer a dull aching pain
Now you decided to show me the same
No sweeping exits or offstage lines
Could make me feel bitter or treat you unkind
Wild horses couldn't drag me away
Wild, wild horses, couldn't drag me away
I know I dreamed you a sin and a lie
I have my freedom but I don't have much time
Faith has been broken, tears must be cried
Let's do some living after we die
Wild horses couldn't drag me away
Wild, wild horses, we'll ride them some day
Wild horses couldn't drag me away
Wild, wild horses, we'll ride them some day

A hyperbole is an extreme exaggeration for effect. In the song, Wild Horses, the phrase, "wild horses couldn't drag me away," is a hyperbole becuase wild horses really could take the singer away. This exageration is meant to show how dedicated the singer is to whomever this song is about. The whole song is centered around this exageration, and I believe that it gives the song a very meaningful effect. This song goes into my theme and genre because wild horses are a part of nature. Wild horses, as well as many other wild animals, are a very beautiful aspect of nature.

Alliteration

Alliteration is the repetition of the same consonant sounds at the beginning of several words in close succession. There are two types of alliteration. Consonance is characterized by the repetition of the same consonant two or more times in succession. Assonance is the repetition of vowel sounds.

Tiptoe Through the Tulips By: Tiny Tim

Tiptoe through the window
By the window, that is where I'll be
Come tiptoe through the tulips with me

Oh, tiptoe from the garden
By the garden of the willow tree
And tiptoe through the tulips with me

Knee deep in flowers we'll stray
We'll keep the showers away
And if I kiss you in the garden, in the moonlight
Will you pardon me?
And tiptoe through the tulips with me.

Tiptoe Through the Tulips shows many examples of consonance. It says, "tiptoe through the tulips" multiple times throughout the song which uses the consonant "t" at the beginning of three successive words. Also, in the first verse the consonant "w" is repeated.

Tim, Tiny. Lyrics. “Tiptoe Through the Tulips” God Bless Tiny Tim. Reprise. 1968. http://www.stlyrics.com/songs/t/timtiny10908/tiptoethroughthetulips347706.html. Web. 7 February 2010.

Rocky Raccoon By: The Beatles

Now somewhere in the black mining hills of Dakota
There lived a young boy named Rocky Raccoon
And one day his woman ran off with another guy
Hit young Rocky in the eye Rocky didn't like that
He said I'm gonna get that boy
So one day he walked into town
Booked himself a room in the local saloon.

Rocky Raccoon checked into his room
Only to find Gideon's bible
Rocky had come equipped with a gun
To shoot off the legs of his rival
His rival it seems had broken his dreams
By stealing the girl of his fancy.
Her name was Magil and she called herself Lil
But everyone knew her as Nancy.
Now she and her man who called himself Dan
Were in the next room at the hoedown
Rocky burst in and grinning a grin
He said Danny boy this is a showdown
But Daniel was hot-he drew first and shot
And Rocky collapsed in the corner.

The doctor came in stinking of gin
And proceeded to lie on the table
He said Rocky you met your match
And Rocky said, Doc it's only a scratch
And I'll be better I'll be better doc as soon as I am able.

Now Rocky Raccoon he fell back in his room
Only to find Gideon's bible
A Gideon checked out and he left it no doubt
To help with good Rocky's revival.

Rocky Raccoon shows many examples of assonance and consonance. First of all, the phrase "rocky raccoon" is an example of alliteration. This is used numerous times throughout the song. Also, the phrases, "grinning a grin," "collapsed in the corner," and "Rocky's revival," show examples of consonance. As for assonance, the phrase,"booked himself a room in the local saloon," is an example of successive vowels in the words room and saloon.

Purple People Eater by: Sheb Wooley

Well I saw the thing comin' out of the sky
It had the one long horn, one big eye
I commenced to shakin' and I said "ooh-eee"
It looks like a purple eater to me

It was a one-eyed, one-horned, flyin' purple people eater
(One-eyed, one-horned, flyin' purple people eater)
A one-eyed, one-horned, flyin' purple people eater
Sure looks strange to me (One eye?)

Well he came down to earth and he lit in a tree
I said Mr. Purple People Eater, don't eat me
I heard him say in a voice so gruff
I wouldn't eat you cuz you're so tough

It was a one-eyed, one-horned, flyin' purple people eater
One-eyed, one-horned flyin' purple people eater
One-eyed, one-horned, flyin' purple people eater
Sure looks strange to me (One horn?)

I said Mr. Purple People Eater, what's your line
He said it's eatin' purple people and it sure is fine
But that's not the reason that I came to land
I wanna get a job in a rock and roll band

Well bless my soul, rock and roll, flyin' purple people eater
Pigeon-toed, undergrowed, flyin' purple people eater
(We wear short shorts)
Flyin' purple people eater
Sure looks strange to me

And then he swung from the tree and he lit on the ground
He started to rock, really rockin' around
It was a crazy ditty with a swingin' tune
Sing a boop boop aboopa lopa lum bam boom

Well bless my soul, rock and roll, flyin' purple people eater
Pigeon-toed, undergrowed, flyin' purple people eater
I like short shorts
Flyin' little people eater
Sure looks strange to me (Purple People?)

And then he went on his way, and then what do ya know
I saw him last night on a TV show
He was blowing it out, a'really knockin' em dead
Playin' rock and roll music through the horn in his head

This song shows a lot of examples of consonance. In the term, "purple people eater," consonance is displayed. A lot of other repetition is also displayed throughout this song.

First Blog Post

The genre of music that I picked for my poetry of song blog is rock.  I chose this genre because it is one of my favorites, and I thought that it would allow me to pick from a wide variety of different artists.  The theme I chose is "Beauty of Nature."  I chose this theme because I feel that the most beautiful parts of life occur naturally all around the universe.  I feel that a lot of rock songs show instances of nature's beauty and all that it does to make life more meaningful.  I was inspired to choose this theme because I love nature and I love music.  I think it will be very interesting to find songs about this subject!

Imagery

Wish You Were Here By: Incubus

I dig my toes into the sand
The ocean looks like a thousand diamonds
Strewn across a blue blanket
I lean against the wind
Pretend that I am weightless
And in this moment I am happy...happy
I wish you were here
I wish you were here
I wish you were here
I wish you were here
I lay my head onto the sand
The sky resembles a back lit canopy
With holes punched in it
I'm counting UFOs
I signal them with my lighter
And in this moment I am happy...happy

I wish you were here
I wish you were here
I wish you were here
Wish you were here
The world's a roller coaster
And I am not strapped in
Maybe I should hold with care
But my hands are busy in the air saying:
I wish you were here
I wish you were
I wish you were here
I wish you were here
I wish you were here
Wish you were here

This song exemplifies proper use of imagery in many ways. In the first line of the song, the very first instance of imagery takes place when it says, "I dig my toes into the sand. The ocean looks like a thousand diamonds strewn across a blue blanket." This allows the listener to picture the singer at a beach, with his toes in the sand looking at a beautiful ocean. Since the goal of imagery is for someone to create a picture in their mind, this is a great example. Other examples of imagery occur in the second verse of the song. It says,"I lay my head onto the sand. The sky resembles a back lit canopy with holes punched in it," which creates an image of the singer laying on the sand looking at the stars in the sky. All in all, Wish You Were Here by Incubus greatly portrays imagery for the listener through its descriptions of some beautiful aspects of nature.

Blowin' In The Wind By: Bob Dylan

How many roads must a man walk down
Before you call him a man?
Yes, 'n' how many seas must a white dove sail
Before she sleeps in the sand?
Yes, 'n' how many times must the cannon balls fly
Before they're forever banned?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind,
The answer is blowin' in the wind.
How many times must a man look up
Before he can see the sky?
Yes, 'n' how many ears must one man have
Before he can hear people cry?
Yes, 'n' how many deaths will it take till he knows
That too many people have died?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind,
The answer is blowin' in the wind.
How many years can a mountain exist
Before it's washed to the sea?
Yes, 'n' how many years can some people exist
Before they're allowed to be free?
Yes, 'n' how many times can a man turn his head,
Pretending he just doesn't see?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind,
The answer is blowin' in the wind.

Blowin' in the Wind by Bob Dylan greatly portrays examples of imagery. It contains many breif words that create images in listener's minds throughout the song. For example, the song says, "How many seas must a white dove sail and how many times must the cannon balls fly," at different parts of the song. Both of these phrases allow listeners to actually see a white dove sailing and a cannon ball fly when they hear those words. Also, the title of the song, and the chorus, include the phrase, "blowing in the wind," which creates the image of all of these examples amist an unseen wind. Although the song is implying that the answers to all of these questions are invisible, we can picture most of the questions in our minds. Dylan allows us to picture these beautiful and natural parts of nature being destroyed with no answer to when or how people will realize what is happening.
